GREENWICH >> Austin Longi’s 1-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds left lifted Greenwich past West Haven 22-21 Sunday in the continuation of a wild game at Cardinal Stadium.
West Haven led 21-14 in the fourth quarter but took a safety with 2:30 remaining as it attempted to run the clock down. Greenwich took over at the West Haven 36.
Several plays later, Longi plunged into the end zone for the eventual winning score.
West Haven was at the Greenwich 19-yard line, leading 13-7 in the third quarter when play was postponed due to storms Thursday night. When play resumed Sunday, Greenwich stopped the Westies on third and goal, setting up a field goal try from the 7-yard line.
Greenwich blocked the field goal and the ball fell to the turf at the 4. While West Haven milled about, Longi scooped it up and ran 94 yards the other way for a 14-13 Greenwich lead.
West Haven came right back and scored on Marshont Little’s 5-yard run and were about to score on its next possession. But Greenwich forced a fumble at the goal line.
West Haven repaid the favor, stopping Greenwich at its own 1 late in the fourth quarter. Rather than punt the ball away, West Haven decided to take a safety, setting up Greenwich’s winning score.
The teams combined for six turnovers. West Haven had four of them, one of which Greenwich’s Kendrick Pozo returned for a touchdown in the second quarter on Thursday.
Ervin Phillips ran for 131 yards on 32 carries for West Haven.
