MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown High’s season-opening game against East Lyme was suspended early in the second quarter due to a violent thunderstorm that struck the area Thursday night. The game will be resumed with Middletown leading 7-0 Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at Rosek-Skubel Stadium on the MHS campus.
When play resumes, Middletown will have first-and goal at the one yard line.
The Blue Dragons scored the first time they touched the ball when Dario Highsmith ran 71 yards for a touchdown at the 4:12 mark of the first quarter. Highsmith already has 120 yards rushing on five carries.
East Lyme began the game with a time-consuming ground game in which the Vikings moved from their 21 to the MHS 29 before a fourth down pass fell incomplete.
The start of the game was delayed 15 minutes because of lightning. Then when lightning was seen again, the officials suspended play and most of the crowd of better than 1,000 left the park before the storm struck.
Middletown High officials announced that no admission will be charged Sunday.
