TORRINGTON >> Call it a logistical rainout.
Torrington’s glittering new turf field is expected to be completed by October 6, which means the Raiders have had to reschedule their home games.
Torrington Athletic Director Mike McKenna tried to preserve football home schedule dates with Woodland and Oxford, working with Torrington Midget Football officials for use of their home Ruwet Field.
Both sides agreed to a first game at Ruwet against Woodland, at 3 p.m. this Saturday. Then logistical problems stacked up. Now Torrington is playing those two games on the road.
“There are two entrances, so we’d have to have people at both ends of the road,” said McKenna of the aborted possibility of playing at Ruwet “The parking lot (at Torrington Middle School) is away from the field, so we’d need people in the parking lot. The final straw was, what happens if it rains? The Midget Football team is playing Sunday and we felt like we had to get the game in.”
The game was moved to Woodland High School at the odd time of Thursday at 4 p.m. because logistical nightmares weren’t over.
“Woodland had problems with their lights,” McKenna said. ” So, with other scheduling conflicts for the afternoons, Friday and Saturday nights were out. (Woodland AD) Brian Fell was fantastic. He was so apologetic about their lights.”
Meanwhile, coaches and teams adjust.
“I took about 15 minutes to get my head right,” Torrington coach Gaitan Rodriguez said. “It changes the routine. With a Saturday game, Monday through Thursday is practice. Friday is the routine.
“This throws you off a little, but it’s the same for both teams. It’s something you can’t control, so you’ve got to roll with it. If that’s what it takes for us to get on our new field, it’s worth it.”
Woodland, the CIAC Class S runner-up last year, opened with a 24-0 win at Watertown last Friday. Torrington lost Friday at Naugatuck, 47-30.
Next week, Torrington plays Friday night at Oxford. Only three home games remain.
The first game on the new field is scheduled for Saturday, October 11 against Derby.
