BRISTOL >> Fairfield American, Connecticut’s representative at the Little League New England Regional tournament, scored five runs in the third inning to beat Maine, 8-2, Tuesday night at Breen Field in Bristol.
Ryan McIntosh had two RBIs and scored a pair of runs for Fairfield American, which ousted Maine from the double-elimination tournament. Fairfield’s Michael Inniamo also had two RBIs for Fairfield American.
Pitcher Matt Longo went three innings and struck out five to earn the victory. Though he allowed Maine’s two runs, Fairfield American struck for five runs in the third inning to erase a 2-1 deficit.
Ianazzo (2 1/3 innings) and Matthew Sawyer closed the game out with three scoreless innings of relief. Ianazzo struck out three batters. Longo struck out five.
Fairfield American, which lost to New Hampshire 7-1 on the first day of the tournament, will now face New Hampshire again on Thursday in an elimination game at 1 p.m. at Breen Field.
New Hampshire (2-1) followed its victory over Fairfield American with a 10-0 loss to Massachusetts on Monday and then a 14-4 loser’s bracket victory over Vermont.
The winner of Thursday’s Fairfield vs. New Hampshire game will advance to Friday’s loser’s bracket final vs. the loser of Wednesday’s winner’s bracket final between Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
The championship series will be played Saturday, 1 p.m.
