WINSTED >> Northwestern’s swimming and diving team asserted its strength over the Berkshire League’s next-best team, Shepaug, in a 101-81 smack-down at the Winsted YMCA Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders won two of the first three events – Rob Peresechino, John King, Connor Campbell and Tony Pucino in the 200-meter medley relay; and Kiley Stotler in the 200-meter IM.
Shepaug’s Ed Wolfe took the 200-meter freestyle.
Shepaug All-Stater Colin Decker won the 50 free and 100 butterfly, wrapped around a diving win by Sean Levielle.
Nevertheless, Northwestern’s depth showed up for the next three places, pouring on the points.
Dan Winkler, second in diving, broke the Northwestern school record with 188.55 to Levielle’s 190.60.
Northwestern’s Stotler was back for a win in the 400-meter freestyle.
Jack Pesce, John DaFonte, Zachary Tibbatts and Decker took the 200 free relay.
Highlanders Persechino and Austin Royer poured it on for wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.
Wolfe, Cody Jordan, DaFonte and Micaela O’Malley won the final event, the 400 free relay, for Sheapug.
But, by then, the three-time defending league champion Highlanders looked like champions again.
