The busiest high school sports season of the year finishes with the biggest rush toward state championships, beginning with play-in rounds today.
Here’s how the sports break out.
Top Seed: Bristol Eastern (18-2)
Area Team: Torrington (9-11)
Notes: No. 27 Torrington opens Tuesday at No. 6 Platt Tech. Despite being crushed in their last three regular season games, the Red Raiders can be a very good team. If they get past Platt Tech, their next opponent would be the winner of Tuesday’s Maloney/Notre Dame game in Wednesday’s second round.
Top Seed: Waterford (19-1)
Area Teams: No. 14 Northwestern (13-7); No. 19 Wolcott Tech (12-8); No. 35 Nonnewaug (8-12).
Notes: Nonnwaug plays a play-in game at No. 30 Ledyard today at Noon. Northwestern, the Berkshire League co-champion with Shepaug, hosts Wolcott Tech Tuesday. The winner is likely to meet No. 3 Tolland Wednesday.
Top Seed: Oxford (16-4)
Area Teams: No. 7 Shepaug (14-6); No. 10 Thomaston (13-7); No. 15 Gilbert (11-9); No. 18 Housatonic (10-10); No. 22 Wamogo (10-10); No. 25 Terryville (10-10).
Notes: After a rough-and-tumble Berkshire League season, all the local teams are capable of moving out of Tuesday’s first round. The BL battle continues with Housatonic at Gilbert. The Yellowjackets join Shepaug and Thomaston in hosting first-round games.
Notes: Seeding for four tournament divisions will be posted next Thursday for the State Tournaments June 6 and 7.

Area Teams: No. 14 Lewis Mills (9-7; No. 22 Housatonic (6-9).
Notes: Housatonic forfeited a play-in game with Ellington Friday; Lewis Mills hosts Immaculate today at 11 a.m.
Top Seed: Old Lyme (15-1)
Area Teams: No. 7 Lewis Mills (11-5); No. 10 Housatonic (10-6).
Notes: Housatonic and Lewis Mills meet for the fourth time this season Tuesday after the Spartans beat Housy for the third time in Thursday’s WCLC Championship.
Wednesday, June 1, Middletown High School, 3 p.m.
Area Team: Torrington boys and girls; Nonnewaug girls
Notes: Torrington’s 4 x 100 relay team is seeded No. 2. Nonnewaug’s Mary Bibbey is seeded first in the 800 meters, third in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200.
Nonnewaug’s girls 4 x 800 team is seeded first. Nonnewaug’s Christina Sordi is fourth in the triple jump.

Notes: Nonnewaug hosts No. 20 Northwest Catholic in Tuesday’s first round; the other two teams are on the road. The Chiefs made a surprise run all the way to the Class L semifinals a year ago.

Area Teams: No. 2 Thomaston (18-2); No. 3 Wamogo (17-13); No. 11 Wolcott Tech (14-6); No. 24 Shepaug (9-10).
Notes: Wolcott Tech, in its second state tournament ever hosts its first Tournament game Tuesday vs. No. 22 Two Rivers (10-10). That should get the Wildcats to Wednesday’s second round vs. Tuesday’s No. 6 Notre Dame-Fairfield/No. 27 Immaculate winner.
Thomaston and Wamogo have first round byes. The Golden Bears were Class S runners-up last year and state champions the year before.
