Class M Girls Soccer
FARMINGTON >> Chloe Waldron, Alessandra Santacroce and Alyssa Wrabel led No. 2 Lewis Mills (16-1) to a 3-1 win over No. 15 Valley Regional (11-4-3) at the Farmington Sports Arena Tuesday night in CIAC second-round game.
“It took us a while to get going, but once we woke up, we played pretty well,” said Mills coach Dennis Fowler. “I give Valley credit; they battled.”
Waldron scored five minutes into the game off a long pass from Maddie Murdick.
The lead stayed 1-0 until nine minutes into the second half when Santacroce took a pass from Wrabel, blasting a shot off Warrior goalkeeper Gabby Gianagrando into the goal.
Eight minutes later, Valley Regional’s Sydney Suedmeirer closed the gap to 2-1 off a corner kick from Maleena Frazier.
With 31 shots for the night, the Spartans nailed the clincher seven minutes from the end of regulation. Wrabel, on a pass from Jenny Merritt, hammered it in, alone in front of the net.
The Spartans host No. 26 Bethel (7-5-6) in a Quarterfinal match at 5 p.m. Friday at Nassahegan Field.
No. 13 Ellington 1, No. 4 Nonnewaug 0 (3-1 PKs): A defensive struggle at Nonnewaug turned into overtime, then penalty kicks, as the Chiefs, 14-4, bowed to the 13-4-1 Knights. Ellington plays a Quarterfinal at No. 12 Enfield (12-2-4) Friday at 5 p.m.
Class S Girls Soccer
No. 14 Terryville 6, No. 3 Med-Ed Prep 0: The Kangaroos marched to a Quarterfinal match at No. 11 Bolton Friday behind four goals Wednesday from Jenna Covello in New Britain.
Covello’s first two came in the first 13 minutes on assists from Biranna Hanlon and Sydney Lopes.
Makayla Descault made it 3-0 in the first half on another assist from Lopes.
Covello and Lopes scored three more goals in the second half, alternating goals and assists.
Class M Girls Volleyball
No. 25 Rockville 3, No. 9 Nonnewaug 0: The Rams swept three tight games at Nonnewaug, 25-17; 25-23; and 25-20. Rockville (10-12) plays a Quarterfinal match at No. 1 Woodland (17-2) Friday. The Berkshire League Champion Chiefs finish their season 12-7.
