TORRINGTON >> Torrington’s softball team beat Naugatuck 12-1 in the first round of the eight-team NVL softball tournament Saturday afternoon at Torrington High School.
Ali Dubois threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one hit batter.
Carissa Carbone hit a home run; Amanda Thiel had a triple; Cierra McGowan and Nina Julian had doubles; Alexis Tyrrell was 3-for-4 with an RBI and 4 runs.
In other quarter-final games Friday and Saturday, No. 1 Seymour beat No. 8 Woodland 1-0; No. 2 Holy Cross beat No. 7 St. Paul 10-1; and No. 4 Oxford beat No. 5 Watertown 3-2 in nine innings.
Monday’s semifinals at Naugatuck High School feature No. 3 Torrington vs. No. 2 Holy Cross at 4 p.m. and No. 4 Oxford vs. No. 1 Seymour at 6 p.m.
Holy Cross (19-2) beat Torrington (17-4) 2-1 in the second game of the regular season.
Northwestern 4, Lewis Mills 1 >> Jason Reola and Vinny Tancreti held the Spartans to four hits at Lewis Mills High School Saturday morning.
Bryce Ramsey was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored; Tony Pucino was 2-for-4 with an RBI; Lukas Gruniuk had 2 RBI for the Highlanders.
Brian Nedley was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for Mills.
The Spartans, 7-11, need another win in their final two regular-season games next week to qualify for the state tournament.
They travel to Gilbert’s Walker Field Monday and host Thomaston Tuesday.
The Highlanders, 12-7, host Litchfield Tuesday in their final regular-season game.
