THOMASTON >> Thomaston’s quest for a third straight deep finish in the Class S State Softball Tournament ended in a 5-3 quarterfinal loss to Stafford Thursday afternoon at Thomaston High School.
The Golden Bears, seeded second in the tournament, took a 2-0 lead by the end of the second inning. No. 10 Stafford overcame it with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then two more in the sixth.
Thomaston answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but this time, unlike Sam Brostek’s heroics in Round Two, there was no game-saving home run waiting at the end.
Morgan Sanson led the Bears with 10 strikeouts on the mound and 2-for-3 with a single and RBI at bat. Gabrielle Hurlbert was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Alexa Milius had an RBI double.
For the Bulldogs, Hannah Davis had 7 strikeouts on the mound and an RBI triple. Julie Milnes (2-for-3, triple, RBI); Jordan Sierra (2-for-4); and Abbe Minor (2-for-4, 2 RBI) were Stafford’s other big bats.
The Golden Bears go out 19-3 after a spectacular three-year run.
