Last year’s Berkshire League boys basketball regular season and league tournament champions, Northwestern and Lewis Mills, opened up the full winter season with wins Monday night.
Northwestern 71, Shepaug 57: In Washington, Highlander senior Alex Case sprinted and bombed for 28 points, including 5 three-pointers, followed by Tucker Kreh’s 14 points in a game separated by just eight at the half.
Shepaug’s Ryan LaMay stayed close with 24 points. Clayton Schneider had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Lewis Mills 47, Gilbert 29: Jackson Lord led the Spartans with 15 points at home. Trevor Baker added 10 as eight Mills players produced points.
Jack Wendel had 8 for the Yellowjackets.
Terryville 46, Wamogo 33: The Kangaroos gave interim coach Dave Alarcon his first win behind 20 points from Ian Schmidt, including 4 three-pointers, at Wamogo. Ariel Batista added 11.
Garrett Coe paced Wamogo with 12.
Lewis Mills 54, Gilbert 46: The Spartans (1-2) broke into the win column behind 16 points from Samira Abdelrehim; 12 from Gabriele Bagdonis; and 10 from Brooke Murdick.
Marcela Moreira had 14 for Gilbert, 0-3.
Nonnewaug 35, Litchfield 25: Nonnewaug stayed spotless (3-0) while handing the Cowgirls (2-1) their first loss. Courtney Carlson and Mary Bibby led the Chiefs with 14 and 11 points. Sam Foley had 9 for Litchfield.
Shepaug 42, Northwestern 40: Shepaug’s Caroline Kelly had 21 points and 16 rebounds as the Spartan’s main force. Samantha Moravsky followed with 13.
Morgan Daley and Addie Hester posted double figures, 13 and 10, for the Highlanders.
Shepaug is 2-1; Northwestern is 0-3.
Wamogo 59, Terryville 40: Sophomore Rose Kelly led Wamogo (2-1) with 22 points, followed by Brooke Neller’s 15 and Olivia Cook’s 10 in a big win at Terryville. McKenzie Huria had 13 for the Kangaroos (0-3).
Thomaston 49, Housatonic 23: Thomaston’s defense kept the Mountaineers to single digits in each quarter until the fourth as Morgan Sanson (19 points) and Casey Carangelo (10 points) rampaged on offense.
Northwestern wrestlers finished first or second in four weight classes in Saturday’s Fairfield Ludlowe Tournament. Angelo Folino and Joshua Schwartz were champions at 106 and 138. Joey Pedrolini and Gabe Schwartz were second at 126 and 195.
