BURLINGTON >> Northwestern’s girls volleyball team won the four-team Berkshire League volleyball tournament in a 2-1 (9-25, 25-15, 25-23) come-from-behind thriller over Lewis Mills at Lewis Mills High School Friday night.
The regular-season champion Highlanders breezed past No. 4 seed Terryville 25-15, 25-13 in the semifinals while the No. 2 Spartans did their own gut-check against No. 3 Nonnewaug.
Nonnewaug tok the first game 25-22, then came close to the upset in the best-of-three match before Mills pulled out a 27-25 win in Game Two, then put it away 25-17 in Game Three.
The Chiefs’ Maddie Conroy was the offensive star with 15 kills, 5 aces and 10 digs.
Spartans Sarah Wall (22 digs) and Arlee Twitchell (23 assits, 6 digs) offset Conroy for Mills.
Spartan momentum carried into Game One of the finals with a 25-9 stunner over the Highlanders, who went undefeated in the league season.
Emily Hamel (5 kills, 4 digs) and Haley DeJoseph (7 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces) led the raid on Northwestern’s confidence.
But Northwestern came back for a convincing 25-15 win in Game Two led by Molly Porch (6 kills, 6 digs) and Julia Vivian (6 kills, 2 digs), then outlasted the
Spartans in a final 25-23 nail-biter for the crown.
