WOODBURY >> Nonnewaug’s boys soccer team clinched the Berkshire League title with a 2-1 win over Lewis Mills Tuesday afternoon at Nonnewaug High School.
Mills came in with just a single regular-season loss – to undefeated Nonnewaug. A 0-0 haltime score still dangled a chance at a share of the title with a win.
Chiefs Leland Malloy and Nate Firlings dampened the Spartans’ hopes with goals in the second half.
Joe Fortuna gave them one last wave with a Lewis Mills goal four minutes from the end of the game.
Mills held the title for four years before Nonnewaug’s win.
Housatonic 2, Terryville 1 >> Mountaineer Johan Diaz broke a 1-1 halftime tie 12 minutes into the second half at Terryville.
Terryville’s Adem Kepi put the Kangaroos on the board first with a goal midway through the first half with an assist by Ryan Mensel, but Housy’s Finn Bamberry set up the win with a tying goal none minutes before the break.
Housatonic is 6-9-1; Terryville is 8-6-2.
Shepaug 3, Litchfield 0 >> Ignassi Sales Goula gave the Spartans a 1-0 halftime lead at home. Eamon Crossley and Fernando Pires iced the win with goals in the second half.
Litchfield is 3-12-1; Shepaug is 4-10-2.
Lewis Mills 2, Nonnewaug 1 >> On a day for tight clashes at the top of the Berkshire League, Chloe Waldron was dominant on offense for Mills (14-2) while Maggie Hannon and Cally Roy held the Chiefs (14-1-1), who already clinched the title, to a 20-7 shot disadvantage.
Still, the score was 0-0 at the half.
Waldron fixed that with a goal nine minutes into the second period. Alyssa Wrabel made it 2-0 midway through the half.
Allison Green put the Chiefs on the scoreboard with six minutes left in the game.
Litchfield 3, Shepaug 1 >> Alexa Guerrera, Christine Orsini and Molly Andrulis led the Cowgirls (8-8) to a state tournament berth with their winning goals at Shepaug.
Sofia Mancinone scored for the Spartans (3-11-2) with an assist by Gwen Noto.
Northwestern 7, Gilbert 0 >> Addie Hester (2), Emma Propfe, Sydney Sanden, Hannah Reola, Sydney Dzenutis and Jill Keegan all scored at Northwestern High School.
Reola, Propfe, Maya Roller and Miranda Tranquillo had assists.
Dilseya Sarmiento made 15 saves for the Yellowjackets.
The Highlanders are 8-7-1; Gilbert is 1-13-2.
Thomaston 1, Wamogo 0 (OT) >> Golden Bear Kaitlyn Root scored the only goal at Wamogo with just two minutes left in overtime.
Northwestern 4, Wamogo 1 >> Highlander Sydney Shaffer had two goals at Wamogo, together with goals by Bethany Markowski and Abigail Harwood.
Hailey Hotchkiss scored for the Warriors.
Wamogo goalkeeper Brooke Baldwin had 18 saves.
Northwestern is 9-3-3-1; Wamogo, 5-6-0-4.
Nonnewaug 1, Lewis Mills 0 >> The Berkshire League Champion Chiefs (14-1-1) finished their regular season at home in a tight win over Lewis Mills (8-5-1-2).
After a scoreless first half, junior forward Maiya Wendel stepped up for the game’s only goal, with an assist by Madison Cleary.
Housatonic 3, Gilbert 1 (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21) >> Housatonic (8-10) qualified for states with the win at Gilbert. Megan Baldesseri (5 aces, 6 kills); Autumn Freudenberg (5 blocks); and Margaret Riccardelli (7 aces, 6 kills) led the way for the Mountaineers.
Ali Brochu (7 kills, 1 assist, 4 aces); Deanna Delacruz (7 kills, 1 ace); and Liz Wexler (1 kill, 14 assists, 4 aces) were on top for the Yellowjackets (6-13).
