WINSTED >> Litchfield’s boys basketball team (6-8), a preseason Berkshire League favorite that’s struggled to find its groove, stunned Northwestern Wednesday night at Northwestern with a start-to-finish 63-52 win in just the second league loss for the Highlanders (12-3).
Junior Ryan O’Neill carried most of the load with 29 points as the Cowboys built leads in every quarter, with a high of 41-29 after three. Brandon Hookstadt joined O’Neill in double figures with 10 points.
The Highlanders, led by Anthony Case (12 points) and Zach Plitt (10 points) couldn’t get past the 11-point lead in the final period.
Nonnewaug 39, Terryville 33 >> The Chiefs came out on top in a showdown between the Berkshire League’s two best teams.
Henry Helishorn started the momentum with a pin at 220; Kyle Crouse won at 106; David Dabdowski at 126; Brian Campbell, 145; Kieran Duggan, 152; and Rodney Banks at 170.
Terryville, the defending league champion, came back with wins by Jason Hume at 285; Ian Poitras, 120; Fred Ellegard, 132; Josh Teller, 160; and Josh Wright, 195.
They’ll butt heads again this Saturday at the Berkshire-Valley Invitational at Thomaston for the combined unofficial Berkshire League/NVL crown.
