FAIRFIELD — We will have to wait one more day to find out who will be the champions of the 50th Borck Junior Golf Tournament.
Lightning halted play at Brooklawn Country Club shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday. The boys championship final was on the 12th green while the girls final had just completed nine holes.
The tournament committee tried to resume play over an hour later, but after some more lightning in the area, the decision was made to resume play on Thursday at 9 a.m.
“The forecast didn’t look like we would get enough of a break to finish,” Borck tournament director Jim Palsa said. “So to go off for two more holes and not have matches settled wasn’t going to make a lot of sense.”
When play resumes, Charlie Duffy, a member at Tashua Knolls GC in Trumbull, has a short par putt on the 12th hole to remain 1-down to Ashton Lewis (Fairchild Wheeler GC) in the boys final.
Lewis, a rising senior at Fairfield Warde, had never made it to match play in his previous times playing in the Borck. He has won three straight this year.
“It’s not going to make that big of a difference because I get a full night’s rest, he gets a full night’s rest,” Lewis said. “So it’s going to be a tough battle tomorrow. Hopefully, I can get it done.”
Mia Scarpati, who plays out of Ridgewood CC, owns a 3-up lead over Sophia Sarrazin (Longshore GC) as they enter the back nine. Scarpati is the defending champion.
Scarpati said she had to come back to finish her round at the U.S. Girls Junior qualifier at Rockrimmon CC in June due to inclement weather.
“Honestly, it’s kind of tough. I was hoping to finish it today,” Scarpati said. “I started out rough. I was very nervous, but I quickly regained confidence to have something going. There’s nothing I could do about it. She will come back fresh tomorrow. I’ll try not to think about the fact that lots of things can happen. I’ll focus on playing my game and continue what I started.”
Scarpati won holes 5, 7 and 8 to gain that 3-up advantage.
Lewis took a 1-up lead after Duffy conceded his short birdie put on the 440-yard fourth hole. Duffu squared the match with a par on the sixth hole.
Duffy, who will be a sophomore at Fairfield Prep, failed to get up and down from in front of the green on the par-5 seventh hole for par, allowing Lewis to take a 1-up lead again.
In the morning boys semifinals, Duffy hit his approach on the par-4 18th hole to just a few feet. Jonathan Bushka, who plays out of Great River GC in Milford and is a member of the Notre Dame-West Haven golf team, missed his lengthy birdie attempt and conceded Duffy’s attempt, resulting in a 2-up victory for Duffy.
Lewis won his morning semifinal 3 and 2 over Michael Rothberg, also a member of Fairfield Prep’s team and at Mill River CC in Stratford.
Starting next year, the Connecticut State Golf Association will help run the Borck tournament. It will remain in its current format and still be held in Fairfield County.
