Lewis Mills girls soccer defeats Wamogo easily

Gametime CT | September 16, 2013

BURLINGTON >> Lewis Mills continued their early season domination Monday afternoon in a convincing win, this time over the Wamogo Warriors, 8-0.

“Jason (Stock) has a great team and a great program at Lewis Mills,” said Wamogo head coach, Filipe Lima. “They’re the cream of the crop in the Berkshire League and throughout all the divisions, they’re a top five team in the state.”

The Spartans got on the board early and often in the first half, scoring four of their six first half goals in the first 10 minutes.

“Our plan every game is to try and score at least two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game,” said Stock.

Senior, Shannon Doyle got the scoring parade started for the Spartans, scoring the first and second goals of the game in the first five minutes to give Mills an early advantage.

“Our goal is to start the game off strong,” said Doyle, who scored the sixth goal of the game for Mills, giving her, her first varsity hat-trick.

Not to be overlooked was the stellar play by the Spartans defenders who prevented the Warriors from getting in their offensive zone for even a minute, holding them to one shot on net.

“We have a strong defensive line,” said Doyle. “It’s hard for any team to get by them.”

After Doyle’s first two goals, sophomore Maddie Murdick, senior Julia Pearson and Bailey Pace each scored a goal before Doyle’s hat-trick goal, giving the Spartans a commanding 6-0 lead at half.

“Coach tells us to start off strong,” said Doyle. “We try to get goals in quick.”

Going up by six goals was nice for Mills, but at the same time it made the second half difficult. They didn’t want to keep scoring, but they didn’t want to slow up and fall into bad habits as well.

“That’s a challenge,” said Stock. “We have to get used to playing full games, we have to keep our tempo up the whole game.”

In the second half of the game, Pace scored her second goal of the game and senior, Anna Marinelli also scored.

The Warriors are now 0-3 and have put the hardest part of their schedule behind them.

“We opened up against Nonnewaug, Litchfield and now Lewis Mills all on the road,” said Lima, whose team is young this season. “The core of our players are sophomores and juniors, this is good experience.”

Mills is now 3-0 and has won each game by big margins, 7-0 against Shepaug, 6-1 against Northwestern and the win against Wamogo and there isn’t any plans of stopping.

“We’re trying to take every game as serious as a State tournament game,” said Doyle. “We’re trying to win States.”
