NEW BRITAIN >> He changed uniforms, He changed teams. What he didn’t change was his ability to pitch. As in pitch very well.
Saturday night Tommy Seaver got his number called in the seventh inning of a tie game, threw a shutout inning and emerged the winner when Rocky Hill High rallied to beat Haddam-Killingworth for the Class M championship at Palmer Field.
Tuesday evening, Seaver picked up where he left off in going six innings in a 4-0 RCP American Legion Zone 7 win over New Britain at Beehive Stadium.
“I’m still up from the win Saturday, I’m still happy,” said Seaver. “But tonight my job was to pitch. So I just went out on the mound and pitched.”
Seaver allowed just one hit, a fourth inning double to Miguel Ortiz, and struck out 12. Tucker Lord finished up, striking out two in the seventh.
Add to that total of 14 the 17 strikeouts Jake Regula put up Monday against New Britain, and think maybe RCP can pitch?
“Our strength should be pitching,” said RCP coach Jay Hickey. “Seaver did a good job tonight. He’s a very good pitcher. When you’re a pitcher, it’s like a catcher, you don’t have time to think about previous games; you have to pitch.”
New Britain starter Michael Ortiz hurt his arm after two batters – both of whom reached and scored – and he was relieved by Manny Sandoval, who pitched seven good innings for New Britain. Sandoval allowed just two runs on four hits.
“RCP is a very good team,” said Sandoval. “They’re really competitive and gave us two great games. We just have to regroup and get back out there.”
Alex Ramirez was hit with a pitch to open the game and he scored on Christian Budzik’s double to left center. That’s when Ortiz was lifted with the injury. Chris Bouchard got Budzik home with a fly ball and RCP led 2-0.
RCP got a run without a hit in the second. Cole Ogorzalek walked to start the inning, stole second, was balked to third and scored when left fielder Christian Carvajal dropped a two-out fly ball.
A double by Budzik and a two-out triple by Logan Lessard drove home RCP’s final run in the fifth inning.
Budzik and Cory Baldwin each had two hits for RCP.
RCP (3-1 overall and 2-0 in the zone) is home today at 5:45 p.m. at Fran Monnes Field at Cromwell High School with New Britain.
