Live Blog Replay: SWC Final and key bonus games

Sean Patrick Bowley | November 21, 2013

The SWC Championship kicks off tonight at Brookfield High School. Newtown (10-0) faces Brookfield (9-1) on Brookfield’s home field, looking to repeat as SWC champs for the first time since winning the inaugural titles back-to-back in 1996 and 1997. Brookfield is looking for its first title since 2008.

But in the grand scheme of all things CIAC playoffs, it means nothing.

There are a select few regular season games going on, and two of them have HUGE bearing on several state playoff races.

First: Matt Fischer’s CIAC live playoff update pages (aka H.A.L. 9000). You can watch your point potentials rise and fall live with each result.

 CLASS LL | CLASS L | CLASS M | CLASS S

Here’s our ‘Mad Scientist’ snapshot of the state playoff scenarios, which will begin to change beginning tonight.

In the ECC:
East Lyme at New London, 6:30 p.m. — New London needs two wins to punch its ticket to the Class L playoffs. A loss here won’t destroy their chances, but they’d have to beat NFA on Thanksgiving. But why take chances? The Whalers can at least get into position by defeating East Lyme. Other Class L contenders like Naugatuck, Farmington, Bristol Eastern, Hand and North Haven will be hoping the Whalers stumble. If not here, then next week.

Killingly at Stonington, 6:30 p.m. — Like New London, Stonington needs to win twice to have any shot at qualifying for Class M. Unlike New London, the Bears CAN’T lose if they want any chance at stealing a spot. A loss would knock them out and brighten the prospects of Class M bubble teams Wolcott and Foran. Also: A Killingly win gives needed bonus points to Ledyard and maybe Quinnebaug Valley (Putnam/Tourtellotte) in their bids for Class M playoff berths. Quinnebaug needs to beat Killingly next week to get in.

Ledyard at Waterford, 6:30 p.m. — Another huge game with Class M playoff implications. Ledyard needs to win twice to secure a playoff berth. One loss will put them on the borderline, needing bonus help on Thanksgiving. Stonington, Wolcott and Foran would love to see the Colonels stumble.

OTHERS
Canton at Enfield, 7:00 p.m. — Very little playoff intriuge here.
Jonathan Law at Plainfield, 6:00 p.m. — Plainfield winning helps Ledyard’s point potential in Class M. Law winning would help Foran should the Lions have a shot on Thanksgiving.

So lots to look out for. Join us, won’t you?
