Welcome to Uni-Browse, where we will be taking a deeper look at high school uniforms around the state and letting you vote for your favorite each week.
I have been a fan of uniforms for as long as I have been watching sports and it turns out, others are just as fascinated. I began writing about baseball uniforms several years ago on the HearstCT Baseball Blog and found out people are super into it.
GametimeCT now gives me the perfect platform to relaunch Uni-Browse and take my love of uniforms state wide.
Football is traditionally a conservative landscape of uniforms, but over the last decade that has changed and some teams are embracing new looks and designs, while others are keeping the classics in style.
Most of all, talking about uniforms is really fun and we here at GameTimeCT want to get you the fans in on the conversation.
We want to see the new, the old, the traditional and the alternates.
If you have a uniform you want us to check out, leave it in the comments below or hit up @EricsonSports or @GametimeCT on Twitter.
Here are your choices for this week.
GILBERT/NORTHWESTERN
While many teams have highly styled uniforms, the Gilbert/Northwestern Yellowjackets wear the throwbacks of all throwbacks. There is nothing fancy about the jerseys, pants or helmets but, then, the Pequot League is not one for frills. The helmets are white with red numbers on the side and a red stripe bordered in yellow down the middle. Jerseys are yellow with red trim including double stripes on the shoulders with numbers under them on the arm. The pants are white with a yellow stripe bordered in red stripes and yellow socks.
ST. JOSEPH
The St. Joe’s football jerseys are like an Easter egg hunt for uniform fans. Classic maroon jersey with gold numbers outlined in white and St. Joseph across the chest. Gold stripe on the end of the sleeve and gold crescent moons at the end of the shoulder pads with numbers high up on the shoulders. Now the fun stuff. There is a “SJ” logo with a hog running through it on the front left and a FCIAC patch on the right front. On the back in small print above the numbers it reads “win everyday” in gold. The pants are gold with two maroon stripes. Helmets are maroon with gold “SJ” with the running hog between the letters.
WILBUR CROSS
There is something about a team in all black uniforms that just works in football. Wilbur Cross has updated threads but still pull off the all-black look. The helmets are matte black red numbers outlined in white on the side and a red stripe outlined in white down the middle. The jerseys are cool with a very light snakeskin-like design overlaying the black jerseys. On the sleeve there are broken up red and white stripes. “Governors” is across the chest in black, outlined by white, and the numbers are white, outlined in red. The pants have the same snake skin look and an interlocking “WC” on the upper left leg.
HARDING
The Presidents are going bold with their new uniforms. It is safe to say, it is a combination rarely seen on any field and really stood out on opening night. The helmets remained the same, royal blue with a gold eagle on the left side while the right side is blank. The jerseys are black with block numbers and “Presidents” across the chest in gold. On the sleeve are four blue stripes in a unique pattern of descending size going down. The pants are solid black.
Interesting . I like the addition to the site with descriptions. Gilbert!! My last home in Connecticut. At the time even considered teaching and assistant D coaching if possible. Colebrook is an awesome place that many may not be aware of and i liked it.
No poll for voting?
ANYTHING New Canaan wears….EXCEPT when they go with the same color pants as the jerseys.
For real. They are on another level with their uni’s. Kinda wish they would go back to the ram horn helmets from 5 years ago. I was always a fan of those.
Really don’t know how Gilbert Northwestern is on there. Those are pretty ugly
Gilbert unis look like a cousin of the original Tampa Bay Bucs unis!
I say Killingly simply because they have the coolest helmet in the state!! The “head dress” helmet is fantastic!! Let’s see the Redmen in next week’s poll.
