Welcome back to another edition of Inside The Circle, GameTimeCT.com’s weekly look at the happenings in Connecticut high school softball with editor Sean Patrick Bowley and beat writer Ryan Lacey.
And there’s lots to discuss this week. The anticipated No. 1 Masuk v. No. 2 St. Joseph showdown finally was played after three previous postponements and saw St. Joseph’s eke out a 2-0 victory, ending Masuk’s 41-game win streak.
We also saw No. 3 North Haven lose its first game of the season when Cheshire rallied against ace Lauren Card to produce a 3-1 victory.
And it was a nutty week in the NVL, especially between border rivals Oxford and Seymour splitting a pair of games. We talk about that and we also talk about the lack of love shown toward St. Paul, among other developments.
This week’s special guest is, of course, St. Joseph’s two-time state championship coach JEFF BABINEAU whose team ascended to the No. 1 ranking as a result of consecutive victories over Trumbull and Masuk.
Coach talks about that game how his team balances the pressure of winning with all of the extracurricular issues and responsibilities — things like the Prom and impending graduation — that go with playing in the spring. We talk about this year’s team and the challenge of navigating the upcoming FCIAC and Class L tournaments.
This podcast was recorded Tuesday afternoon, so games from Tuesday and Wednesday will be discussed next week.
