WELCOME BACK to another edition of Inside the Circle, your weekly audio look at the week in Connecticut high school softball and, with just a few days before the start of the 2019 postseason, hosts Ryan Lacey and Sean Patrick Bowley talk with JOE MORRELL, head coach of one of the year’s most surprising teams: The West Haven Blue Devils.
Morrell is the first head coach to make a second appearance on the GameTimeCT family of podcasts (he joined us last winter as the head coach of West Haven’s boys hockey team). This time around Morrell gives us the details on how the Westie softball team, led by pitcher Ivy Santos, has put together one of its best seasons in years. (Hint: It took a lot of practice and some fun bonding exercises during the offseason).
Morrell also talks about replacing legendary Westie coach Frank Biondi in 2015; how he’s able to go from coaching hockey to softball in such a short time between seasons; the challenges of keeping up the town’s youth program, which has dealt with dwindling numbers; and how this year’s team is shaping up for a potential postseason run.
You can listen to the pod in the widget above. But if the audio player doesn’t show, you can always listen via Soundcloud by clicking here.
