Housatonic girls soccer hands Litchfield first loss of the season

Peter Paguaga | September 23, 2013

LITCHFIELD >> After a close physical loss to Wamogo over the weekend, the Housatonic Mountaineers took its frustration out on the Litchfield Cowgirls winning 4-1.

“This weekend we had a tough game,” said Mountaineers senior goalie, Jill Cannon. “It motivated us, we were a little angry from it.”

Housatonic was able to transform that anger into motivation as they jumped out against the previously unbeaten Litchfield squad and didn’t look back.

“Knowing it’s their first loss is good,” said Housatonic head coach, Tess Segalla. “The girls needed a confidence boost.”

Despite it being Litchfield’s first loss of the season, head coach David Constant was happy with the way his girls played.

“It just wasn’t meant to be today,” said Constant. “I am really proud of them; they played hard today and showed a lot of passion.”

It wasn’t easy for the Mountaineers early on.

The Cowgirls had a handful of opportunities in the first half but couldn’t get any past Cannon.

“She just goes big or goes home,” said Segalla. “She was our MVP last season; she is a good heart on this team.”

Cannon made saves on corners, crosses and even some one-on-ones from Litchfield’s Tara Shakley, who led the game with seven shots, also added a goal in the second half.

“I had really good mindset,” said Cannon who made 10 saves in the win. “I just focused on where the ball was.”

With the Cowgirls unable to capitalize on its chances, the Mountaineers did, when they scored at the 15:42 mark.

Sophomore Maddie Horosky was able to score on a scrum in front of the net, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

“Maddie is a transfer from Immaculate, she has been amazing for us,” said Segalla. “Her skill level is amazing.”

Horosky added another goal right before halftime giving the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead

“I think it really helps us get a feel of where we need to be to win,” said Horosky.

The 2-0 lead was enough for the Mountaineers especially with Cannon in goal.

“She definitely saved us a lot,” said Horosky of Cannon’s performance. “A lot of the times she was one-on-one.”

Another underclassman for the Mountaineers, freshman Lauren Segalla, scored two goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.

“Our underclassmen did great,” said Segalla, speaking of the games of Horosky and Lauren Segalla.

Litchfield (4-1) will look to regroup before its next game on the road against Nonnewaug on Friday.

“We will come back tomorrow and fix some of the mistakes,” said Constant. “We have a lot more games to play ahead.”

Housatonic is now 2-3 and hopes to catapult off of this win when they take on Northwestern on the road on Thursday.

“This will be great motivation for us in the future,” said Cannon.
