Seizing a four-goal first-half lead, the Sacred Heart Greenwich field hockey team rolled past Millbrook School, 7-0, on the road on Saturday.
Junior forward Ryan Smith recorded three goals, while freshman midfielder Beth Yeager registered two goals and one assist to power the Tigers.
Yeager got the scoring going for Sacred Heart, tallying with 26:05 left in the first half. Smith added a goal at the 15:02 mark, then Yeager struck again with 7:39 left in the opening half. Smith scored off a Yeager pass, giving the Tigers a 4-0 halftime lead.
“We came out ready to play,” Tigers coach Alex Gheorghe said. “We quickly capitalized on our chances, which gave us a good win.”
Junior forward Ellie Manriquez scored 3:56 into the second half, while Smith and sophomore Katie Keller added goals later in the half. Sacred Heart held a 9-3 advantage on penalty corners.
GREENWICH ACADEMY FIELD HOCKEY
The Gators ran their record to 13-0, edging Westminster School on the road, 2-1.
Junior Sofia Viola scored both goals for the Gators. She scored the game’s first goal with 9:59 left in the first half off a pass from sophomore Caroline Hughes. Viola gave GA a 2-0 lead with a goal later in the half. Seniors Manveer Sandhu and Karina Schulze were each credited with assists on the goal.
Ashley White scored for Westminster. Junior Isabella Santucci made eight saves in goal for the Gators, who registered three penalty corners and seven shots on goal.
Greenwich Academy visits rival Hotchkiss School on Thursday.
GREENWICH ACADEMY VOLLEYBALL
The Gators prevailed on the road against Berkshire School, 3-1.
Greenwich Academy won the match by game scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-18. Junior Kate Miele had 10 kills, while senior Emma James posted nine aces and three blocks to pace GA.
Junior Grace Ryan added 10 kills, 12 assists, four aces and four digs, while freshman Valesca Lasky had 15 assists. Also leading GA was senior Casey Gottlieb (16 digs, five kills, four aces).
“Emma James coming back with key serves really brought us ahead,” GA coach Christy Girard said. “Our girls kept pushing forward and they’re getting better.”
SACRED HEART VOLLEYBALL
The Tigers dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Hotchkiss School on Senior Day.
The Bearcats won the match, 25-19, 25-17, 25-27, 25-23.
“We had some really nice plays,” Sacred Heart coach Beth Wilson-Jordan said. “When our pass was to the target, we had some really beautiful plays.”
Senior Ellie McKenney had four kills, while senior Laura Holland notched 15 kills and seven blocks for Sacred Heart. Natalia Pazis, a junior, had four kills, 13 assists and 11 digs.
McKenney added 31 digs and two aces, while sophomore Kellie Ulmer had two kills, four digs and two aces for the Tigers.
“Elie was wonderful and Laura played great at the net,” Wilson-Jordan said.
SACRED HEART SOCCER
The Tigers played host Millbrook School to a 2-2 draw.
Freshman Isabel DeVita scored a goal in the 22nd minute for Sacred Heart. Alana Frederick, also a freshman, tallied in the 24th minute for the Tigers.
Junior Julia Spiegel had nine saves in goal for Sacred Heart.
