After snapping Staples’ 63-match winning streak on Wednesday, the Greenwich High School boys tennis team swept Westhill in a match held on Thursday, 7-0.
Winners of seven consecutive matches, the Cardinals sport a record of 8-2. In a matchup featuring two of the better singles players in the FCIAC, Greenwich junior Justin Speaker edged Westhill’s Jordan Soifer at the No. 1 spot, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.
At second singles, Matthew Luzzi of Greenwich was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Rohan Suryawanski. Third singles saw Matthew Tamis win his match against Westhill’s Arjun Batra, 6-1, 6-0. Alican Beba gave GHS a 6-4, 6-0 win at fourth singles.
In doubles competition, Boris Ardemasov/Derek Wang posted a 6-2, 6-4 win. At the No. 2 doubles spot, Stefan Brovig/James Cosby of the Cardinals notched a 6-3, 6-4 triumph. Kian Jain/Jimmy Papas teamed up for another win at third doubles for the Cardinals, taking a 6-3, 6-4 decision.
Greenwich visits Wilton on Monday at 4 p.m.
GREENWICH BOYS GOLF
The Cardinals upped their mark to 4-0 by defeating Fairfield Prep, 150-164, in a match held on Wednesday at Country Club of Fairfield.
Jackson Fretty shot a 34 over nine holes to pace the Cardinals. Billy Nail carded a 38, as did Ben Ropiak for Greenwich, which received a round of 40 from Tyler Sudell.
Will Malek shot a 37 for Fairfield Prep (1-3-1).
