BRUNSWICK HOCKEY

The season is only four games old, yet the Brunswick School hockey team has gone to overtime with its opponents three times.

The Bruins’ latest overtime matchup Wednesday resulted in a 3-2 loss to Kent School at Hartong Rink.

With the defeat, Brunswick, which tied Loomis Chaffee School and New Hampton School, dropped to 0-2-2 on the young season.

On the game-winning goal, a failed Brunswick breakout ended up on the stick of an attacking Kent player, who was positioned behind the net. He sent the puck in front to Alex Laferriere, who tallied, sending the Lions to victory. Laferriere had a hat trick for the Lions.

The teams traded goals in the first period, with sophomore Matthew McGroarty getting the Bruins on the board first after a forecheck by senior Aaron Aboodi and a steal from sophomore Michael Salandra. That led to a tic-tac-toe passing sequence for the tally.

Kent answered a few minutes later, capitalizing on a 4-on-3 advantage with a wrister from Laferriere from the left face-off circle, making it 1-1.

In the second period, Kent took a 2-1 lead, with Laferriere scoring with just under two minutes remaining.

Brunswick tied the score in the third period on Cooper Moore’s goal. His goal from the top of the right circle was his NEPSAC leading eighth goal of the season.

The Bruins had a 5-on-3 power play opportunity in the final period, but were unable to tally the go-ahead goal.
