Maloney will not be Howie Hewitt’s last stop on the coaching trail.
Just one day after he announced his “retirement” from Maloney, Hewitt has taken over the vacant Southington girls basketball job, the New Britain Herald reported Tuesday. The official announcement comes Thursday.
Hewitt resigned on Monday after 33 seasons as Maloney’s boys basketball coach, the Record-Journal of Meriden reported.

Hewitt, 66, compiled a record of 457-285, which included the 2008 Class L state championship, defeating Lyman Hall at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. Hewitt was also previously the school’s longtime athletic director and baseball coach.
“…There have been some great things that have happened to me in my life and they never would have happened if I wasn’t the basketball coach at Maloney. I’m grateful and thankful for all of those things,” Hewitt told the Record-Journal.
