MIDDLETOWN – When you open the middle of the field for Doug Harrison, watch out.
The senior running back took advantage of such opportunities on Saturday night, rushing for three touchdowns in Fairfield Prep’s 34-0 win over Xavier.
“They were bringing a lot of pressure,” Fairfield Prep coach Keith Hellstern said. “We tried the formation that put him in a good position to make those big plays and he was able to, three times for us.”
Harrison’s touchdown runs of 29, 26 yards came in the second quarter and the 58-yard run came during the third.
“When the blocking is that tremendous, it’s easy to turn on the jets,” Harrison said. “They did most of the work there.”
And what happens when he sees the open field.
“It’s just lights out, got to run,” Harrison added.
After missing his junior year with a knee injury, Harrison has looked great helping the Jesuits to a 5-1 record.
“After that terrible injury the kid had, it’s good to see him getting healthy because he’s a very good running back,” Xavier coach Andy Guyon said. “You want to see good things for him.”
Despite Harrison’s big runs, Xavier made some mistakes that gave the Jesuits chances to take advantage.
“Yes he is a very good, their offensive line is very good,” Guyon added. “But when you make mistakes, it’s so much easier for them.”
Fairfield Prep’s JP Iarpoli got the Jesuits on the board in the first quarter, hooking up with Finn Duran for a 29-yard touchdown.
The junior quarterback then found Duran again on screen pass. The senior receiver took it 32 yards to the end zone.
“Finn’s great, he’s unbelievable. He’s a fly guy,” Harrison said. “You have to cover him good, if you can.”
Not to be forgotten was the Jesuits defense that held the Falcons off the board.
“They do a great job upfront, they do a good job with their linebackers,” Guyon said. “It’s a good defense. It’s hard to move the ball against them.
