hamden >> Things couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for the Hamden football team on Thursday evening, until Mother Nature intervened.
The Green Dragons pieced together a 14-play, 56-yard scoring play that covered some seven minutes of the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead over Danbury at Joseph Bruno Field. But on Danbury’s ensuing possession, with 1:23 left in the opening quarter, lightning caused play to be stopped. About 10 minutes later, all the lights on the field and in the school went out (though not the scoreboard or press box lights), and the game was postponed and will resume Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Billy Varney hit Maliek Williamson on a 12-yard screen pass for the game’s lone score so far. It was one of only three pass attempts on the Green Dragons’ impressive first drive. Williamson carried the ball eight times for 30 yards.
