Jackson Benigni scored a game-high 32 points, including eight 3-point shots, and added six steals to help earn tournament MVP honors for No. 2 seed Hamden Hall, which defeated top seed Canterbury 75-66 Sunday in the New England Prep School Athletic Council Class B final at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Tre Breland added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Christian Adams also had a double-double (13 points, 12 rebounds) for the Hornets (25-2)
“When I first came to Hamden Hall, this was my goal,” Breland said. “We got knocked out by this team last year and this was the ultimate payback.”
This is the school’s frist NEPSAC title since winning the Class C Division in 2011.
Hamden Hall was down 14 points in the semifinals on Saturday, but roared back to defeat Brooks (Mass.) 65-62. Breland and Adams each led the way with 18 points while Benigni had 17 – all in the second half.
It was a homecoming of sorts for Hamden Hall coach Sean Doherty. He grew up in Worcester and coached at both Holy Cross and Worcester State at the collegiate level.
“I had a lot of family and friends there. It’s a special feeling to win in my hometown,” Doherty said. “Very few players get a chance to win your last game (of a season). That’s a very special feeling.
