Twenty one points from Olivia Davis and 13 points by Francesca Sileo resulted in one big win for the Greenwich Academy basketball team on Tuesday.
Davis, a senior forward, scored 15 of her team-high 21 points in the first half, while Sileo, a junior guard, had nine second-half points to propel third-seeded Greenwich Academy past sixth-seeded Greens Farms Academy, 45-37, in the quarterfinal-round of the FAA Girls Basketball Tournament in Westport.
Greenwich Academy, which avenged a 53-36 regular-season loss to Greens Farms Academy, entered halftime with a 23-20 halftime lead.
“Olivia had a great game, she really led us in the first half,” GA coach Wes Matthews said. “Francesca picked it up in the second half and hit a big 3-pointer to put us ahead late in the second half.”
Josephine Genereux (four points) and Tyler Gray (three points) helped ignite the Gators’ defensive effort.
“They played lock-down defense on their best offensive players,” Matthews said. “This was a total team effort,”
Caroline Schmitz made two free throws that gave Greenwich Academy a two-point lead in the second half, while Sileo made a clutch 3-pointer.
Greens Farms Academy (15-9) was paced by Kelly Van Hoesen’s team-best 14 points. Sara Peltier had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers and Kristiana Modzelewski contributed eight points for the Dragons.
Both teams spent a lot of time on the foul line. GFA shot 6 of 20 from the foul line, while GA made 15 of its 31 free throw attempts.
Greenwich Academy advanced to Thursday’s semifinals, where it will face second-seeded Sacred Heart Greenwich. The Tigers topped seventh-seeded Hopkins School, 45-32, in a quarterfinal-round matchup.
