Greenwich High School was represented by three of its club teams at the 2019 HEAD U.S. High School Team Squash Championships and one of the squads returned home with a national title in its possession.
Greenwich’s girls team won the Division 4 title at the U.S. High School Team Championships, held at Loomis Chaffee School this past weekend. The Division 4 final saw Greenwich register a 5-2 victory over St. Mark’s School (Massachusetts) on Sunday.
At the No. 1 spot, junior tri-captain Christina Keating of the Cardinals defeated Samantha Leslie, 11-4, 11-8, 9-11, 12-14, 11-8 in the championship match.
Sophomore tri-captain Abigail Shropshire (No. 4) won her match against St. Mark’s Charlotte Galusza, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9. Sophomore Nicole Monheim was victorious for Greenwich at No. 5, 3-2 (6-11, 12-10, 11-8, 6-11, 11-5) and sophomore Emily Wong was a 3-1 winner (10-12, 12-10, 11-9, 11-6) in her matchup for the Cardinals.
Michelle Monheim, a sophomore, pulled out a 3-2 triumph at the seventh spot for Greenwich (11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 11-13, 11-5).
Sophomores Lena Thakor (No. 2) and Maya Thakor (No. 3, tri-captain) each lost tough 3-2 matches in the title match against St. Mark’s.
Greenwich’s road to the finals saw them edge Rye Country Day School in the first round, 4-3, MICDS in the second round, 4-3, and Hopkins School in the semifinal-round, 5-2.
With the match tied at 3-3 in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, Shropshire won each time to send GHS to victory.
Greenwich also sent two boys teams to the national tournament, one of which advanced to the semifinal-round of the Division 7 bracket, where they lost to Loyola. They finished 2-2 in the national tournament.
