The Greenwich High School girls water polo team was dealt with its first loss of the season, as it was edged by rival Greenwich Aquatics, 15-13, in a match held on Thursday.
The host Cardinals (4-1) received six goals from junior Kaila Carroll and three tallies by freshman Bella Schraa. Greenwich held leads of 8-7 and 9-8 in the fourth quarter, but Greenwich Aquatics took lead late in the quarter, before the Cardinals forced overtime.
In overtime Greenwich Aquatics opened a two-goal lead and held on for the win.
“We didn’t take advantage of some of our 1-on-1 situations and we missed the cage several times,” Cardinals coach Paul Constantin said. “We just made some small mistakes during certain portions of the game.”
Charlotte Hallisey, a junior, tallied twice for the Cards. Sophomores Nina Chamberlain and Tyler Fox added one goal apiece for Greenwich, which received stellar play in goal from sophomore Jenna Handali. Thursday’s game was delayed between 20 and 30 minutes due to the scoreboard not functioning correctly.
Greenwich is in action again on April 24 against visiting Staples at 4:30 p.m. The Cardinals, who posted a 17-13 win over Greenwich Aquatics on March 28, will play the Aquatics squad again on at the Cardinal Tournament on May 11 at GHS.
“We look forward to playing them again,” Constantin said. “It’s the game that we get the most excited to play during the season.”
