GREENWICH — The first of several lofty goals was accomplished by the Greenwich High School girls swimming team when it put the finishing touch on its perfect regular season on Wednesday.
The Cardinals who have aspirations of winning the FCIAC, Class LL and State Open championships, finished its dual meet season with a record of 10-0 following a 102-75 Senior Day win over Westhill/Stamford.
Now the Cardinals are primed to accomplish plenty more.
“It’s definitely a great feeling to finish the regular season undefeated and now we are so excited for the postseason,” said Greenwich quad-captain Lilly Clisham, who was one of 14 seniors honored. “We have bigger hopes and expectations with FCIACs and the State Open coming up.”
Greenwich began the meet with its 200-yard medley relay of Taylor Schinto, Allison Brea, Kelly Montesi and Louisa Bjerke posting a first-place time of 1:56.91.
Freshman standout Meghan Lynch won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.62. Lynch led from the first lap, then opened a sizable lead during her second lap. Clisham was second for GHS (2:00.39), followed by Westhill’s Rebekah Lockery (2:03.32).
The 200 individual medley saw Montsesi lead from the start en route to registering a winning time of 2:12.25. Teammate Kate Ennis was second in 2:18.41 and Erika Ehret from Westhill/Stamford placed third in 2:18.84.
“I had a couple of hard days of practice leading up to this meet, so I was ready to go,” said Montesi, also a senior quad-captain. “That was the last time I swam that race this season — I’m going to be swimming the 100 butterfly and backstroke during the postseason.”
The 50 freestyle was a close race between Cardinals teammates Julia Merrill and Schinto. Merrill, a senior captain, touched the wall first in 25.67 and Schinto was a blink of an eye behind in 25.76. Faith Somody of Westhill/Stamford took third in 26.33.
“It feels amazing to win this meet on Senior Day and to finish the season the way we did,” Merrill said. “The spirit of the team was so high. Going into the season, we believed that we could be this successful.”
Senior Kate Russack continued her outstanding season on the 1-meter diving board, winning the event with a score of 262.58. Abby Desyr of Westhill/Stamford finished second (247.21) and Annabelle Pollack of GHS was third (234.01).
Montesi was the 100 butterfly winner (59.56), while Clisham placed second (1:01.38) and Westhill/Stamford’s Amanda Conte finished third (1:02.85). Merrill touched out the competition in the 100 freestyle (55.92) and Bjerke was the runner-up (56.06).
“I felt confident going into each race and I was happy I was able to get those times in the 50 and 100 freestyle,” Merrill said.
Junior Emily Warner won the 500 freestyle in 5:26.52, with Maya Watson of Westhill finishing second in 5:32.07. Coached by Lorrie Hokayem, the defending Class LL and State Open champion Cardinals won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.65, which was the last event they scored in. They swam exhibition the final three events.
Faith Somody of Westhill had the top time in the 100 backstroke (1:03.61) and Lynch touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07).
“We swam well today on a day where we were trying to get some good swims in and get used to this pool for next week’s FCIACs,” Westhill/Stamford coach Rick Lewis said. “Faith winning the 100 backstroke was impressive and Abby did very well in diving. It was a good meet for us.”
Montesi reflected on Greenwich’s regular season.
“Finishing the dual meet season undefeated is great,” Montesi said. “It sets us up well for the postseason.”
