GREENWICH — A group of seniors made sure the Greenwich High School girls lacrosse team concluded its regular season in style on Tuesday.
Seniors Grace Fahey, Paige Finneran, Jennifer Kelly and Katie Large combined for 12 goals in the Cardinals’ 16-9 Senior Day victory over visiting St. Joseph in an FCIAC matchup.
Fahey and Kelly each scored four goals, while Finneran recorded a hat trick and Large added one tally for Greenwich (8-8).
Finneran and Large also assisted on two goals for the Cardinals, who begin play in the FCIAC Tournament on Friday. The victors scored nine times during the pivotal second half.
“We had a little bit of a rough start, but overall, we picked it up and brought our play up to the level we need to play at during the postseason,” GHS coach Rachel Vallarelli said. “Coming off a good win today and the way we’ve played the past week-and-a-half, it’s a great way to go into the postseason.”
The Cardinals’ roster includes 10 seniors.
“It was our Senior Day, so everyone was especially motivated,” Cardinals senior defender Olivia Hoekman said. “Our whole senior class had that chemistry on the field from the first second we played. One of the strengths of our program is the diversity and versatility our team has and we are super excited for the postseason. We are ready to show the FCIAC and state that our record does not define who we are as a program.”
St. Joseph (8-7) was paced by senior Jettke Gray’s four goals. Junior Kylie Lucifora and junior Lily Ivanovich each tallied twice, while Annie McNeil, had one goal. Ivanovich assisted on three goals for the Cadets.
Senior Sloane Loveless had five saves in goal in the winning effort.
“We definitely have some fire coming through us,” Loveless said. “This regular season we have learned a lot and we have definitely grown as players. Our chemistry is showing on the field.”
Olivia Caan, Cameron Castelli, Fahey, Finneran, Hoekman, Kelly, Large, Loveless, Zoe Metalios and Courtney Swift are the Cardinals’ seniors.
“We really have a special group of seniors and we all wanted to win it for one another,” Finneran said. “We all really came to play. Today, we started off a little shaky, but we held on to the ball, played smart and had some great stops.”
Added Fahey: “Our regular season wasn’t the best, but we made it to FCIACs and states. We will see certain teams again in the playoffs and hopefully, we’ll have a better outcome. We did it for each other today.”
Junior Jessica Ware tallied three times, while junior Leah Caputo notched one goal and one assist in the victory.
