Two goals from Jennifer Kelly, 21 saves from Hannah Goldenberg and a strong overall defensive effort resulted in one of the Greenwich High School girls hockey team’s biggest wins of the season to date Tuesday night.
The Cardinals skated to a 3-0 road win over Hall-Conard, which entered the game as the No. 1 ranked team in the state.
“We played a very smart, consistent game,” GHS coach Alex Lerchen said. “We did a good job of getting the puck deep against a really good, solid team.”
Following a scoreless first period, the Cardinals entered the second period with plenty of optimism.
“The first period was played at a pretty fast pace,” Lerchen said. “Hall-Conard has a lot of depth, they can put three lines out there. The action was back-and-forth the whole period, so we were happy with our start.”
Greenwich took a 1-0 lead when Kelly, a senior forward, tallied with 11:39 remaining in the second period. With Greenwich on a 5-on-3 power play, went top shelf with a wrister with 10 seconds left on the two-player advantage. Junior defender Katie Piotrzkowski assisted on the goal.
The Cardinals widened their advantage on Kelly’s goal at the 6:18 mark of the third period. Junior defender Sydney Orszulak’s shot bounded off the boards and the opportunistic Kelly knocked the rebound past Hall-Conard senior goalie Nora McGowan, giving the Cards a 2-0 edge. Sophomore forward Delaney Roth also assisted on the goal.
Roth’s empty-netter with 1:17 left to play put the finishing touch on the win. The triumph raised Greenwich’s record to 7-4 overall and according to Lerchen, moved their state ranking up from eighth, to sixth, in the state.
Goldenberg was solid in goal all night for the Cardinals. McGowan made 29 saves for Hall-Conard, which record stands at 11-2.
“Hannah was dynamite in goal,” Lerchen said. “She made some great saves, some of which were through a lot of traffic. Our defense played really smart throughout the game.”
Up next for Greenwich is a matchup against Fairfield Warde-Ludlowe Thursday at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink at 8 p.m.
