Greenwich’s girls and boys ski teams enjoyed a successful showing on the slopes at Mount Southington on Wednesday.
The Cardinals boys and girls squads each began their respective seasons in style, with the boys squad going 6-1 and the girls team posting a record of 5-2.
On the girls’ side, Greenwich’s Sophia Bastek was the race’s overall winner. Bastek finished her first run in 23.32 seconds and her second run in 24.74 seconds to register a winning time of 48.06 seconds.
Samantha Lindell of Darien was the runnerup in the girls race with a time of 48.94, followed by Phoebe Kurth of St. Luke’s (49.72).
Eleanor Ybarra finished 19th for the Cardinals, clocking in at 53.47 (25.41, 28.06). Caitlyn Hone also finished in the top-30 for Greenwich (54.83—26.83, 28.00).
Greenwich’s girls team defeated Darien, Farmington, St. Luke’s, Cheshire Academy and Westbrook. The Cardinals, who finished with a team time of 329.76 seconds, lost to Fairfield (316.54) and Staples (327.94).
In the boys’ competition on Wednesday, Greenwich beat Darien, Fairfield, Cheshire Academy, St. Luke’s and Westbrook. The Cardinals, who posted a team time of 299.62 seconds, were only edged by Staples (298.88).
Matt Sisca paced Greenwich with a second-place finish in the race. Sisca had a time of 24.09 seconds in his first heat and finished in 22.32 in his second run for an overall time of 46.41 seconds.
Chase Gulick from Darien won the race in 45.88 seconds. Robert Donnellan of the Cardinals was fifth in the race with a time of 48.52 (25.03, 23.49).
Christopher Tella of the Cardinals registered a ninth-place finish (25.77—24.04, 49.81), while teammate Matthew Jester was 10th (26.09—24.03, 50.12).
Also for GHS, Hunter Gruenstrass was 15th in 50.78 (26.18, 24.60) and Matthew McCooe finished 30th in 53.98 (27.91, 26.07). Teammate William Clemons finished his two runs in 54.18 seconds for Greenwich (32nd place).
