Greenwich High School seniors Nick Liu and Hayden Witmer advanced to the semifinal-round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament, where they were defeated by the doubles team of Tighe Brunetti/Robbie Daus of Staples, 6-4, 6-3 at Wesleyan University on Thursday.
Brunetti/Daus, seeded first, will play the third-seeded Westhill tandem of Tyler Pomerance/Rohan Suryawanshi in Friday’s 3:30 p.m. doubles final at Wesleyan. Greenwich’s Witmer and Liu advanced to the Class LL semifinals by posting a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), win against No. 12 Yuuki Hosakawa/Ju’Quaiill Banks from Norwalk in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Liu and Witmer posted a record of 3-1 in the tournament for the Cardinals, who had 21 team points following Thursday’s semifinals — good for second place in the team standings. Staples was first with 22 points.
In the Class LL singles final, top-seeded Andrew Ilie of Trumbull and No. 7 Jordan Soifer from Westhill will play on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Wesleyan. Ilie was a 6-4, 6-0 winner against fifth-seeded Brett Gloria in the singles semfinals. Soifer eliminated third-seeded Eric Stein of Staples, 6-2, 6-1.
