After going to overtime its previous two games, the Greenwich High School boys basketball team took care of business in regulation on Wednesday.
And the Cardinals did so against a Danbury team that entered the game in first place in the FCIAC.
On the strength of an effective defensive effort, Greenwich led from start to finish in recording a decisive 58-40 win over visiting Danbury in a late-season FCIAC game.
The Hatters’ record stands at 13-5 overall and 12-3 in FCIAC play. Meanwhile, Greenwich improved its 10-8 overall and 7-8 in the FCIAC. The Cardinals’ chances of making the FCIAC Tournament were hurt when they suffered a 68-66 double overtime defeat against Fairfield Warde on Monday night.
But they have a glimmer of hope of making the conference tournament after Wednesday’s victory. They must win their conference game against Trinity Catholic on Monday and get help from some other teams.
In Monday’s triumph against the Hatters, Greenwich held a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and 33-15 advantage at halftime.
“Our defense in the first half was excellent,” GHS coach Chris Lovermi said. “Following that tough loss to Warde, the kids responded. We made Danbury take tough shots and we were very patient on offense throughout the game.”
The Cardinals’ frontcourt stepped up in a big way. Senior center Oliver Milledge and senior forward Chris Mark scored 16 points apiece to pace the offense. The backcourt was led by junior guard Chris Genaro, who scored 14 points and converted one 3-pointer for the Cardinals.
Senior Billy Nail also sparked GHS from the perimeter, making a trio of 3-pointers.
“It was our last home game and even though we had our Senior Night already, it was nice to get a win for our seniors — especially against a team that’s first in the division.”
Senior guard Javon Hernandez had 10 points, including a 3-pointer, while senior forward Denali Burton and sophomore forward Christian Nalbation added eight points apiece for Danbury.
