Greenwich Academy continued its winning tradition at the U.S. Middle School Team Squash Championships.
GA won the Division I title at the U.S. Middle School Championships for the eighth time on Sunday, edging Greenwich Country Day School, 3-2, in the title match.
With the match, held at Yale University, tied at 2-2, Yvette O’Brien’s victory at the No. 3 spot capped the Gators’ tough 3-2 triump against Greenwich Academy Day. She came back to register a 3-2 victory against Anniston Mahaffy at No. 3, 3-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8.
“She listened to the coaches down to the very last word and it worked,” Greenwich Academy coach Luke Butterworth said. “We have been working hard all season, as we headed into the tournament as underdogs. We have been trained for these scenarios and we are thrilled. The deciding match was a story of true grit and determination.
Charlotte Pastel won her match at the No. 1 position against GA’s Lila Schaftel and Grace Fazzinga was victorious for Greenwich Country Day against Lauren Hawks at No. 2.
Poppy Huffman was a 3-0 winner at No. 3 for the Gators and teammate Ella Miller swept her match at the fifth spot.
