Hyde 50, Portland 34 >> At New Haven, Adasia Beard had a game-high 23 points and Trayneice Mims chipped in with 13 points to lead the Howling Wolves to a season-opening win against the Highlanders Wednesday night at the Truman School. Hyde, which built leads of 17-8 after one quarter and 30-14 at intermission, never trailed. Portland cut Hyde’s lead to 37-28 early in the fourth quarter on baskets by Jill McGrath (seven points) and Ruth Kelley. But the Howling Wolves responded with an 11-0 run, capped by Beard’s rainbow 3-pointer. Angie Louis had seven points for Hyde (1-0). Kelley finished with a team-high 10 points and Brooke Marconi had nine points on three 3-pointers for Portland (0-1).
Mercy 60, East Haven 29 >> At East Haven, Mercy built a 38-10 halftime advantage and cruised to a season opening victory against the Yellowjackets. Maura Fitzpatrick and Sarah Gallo each had 17 points, Taylor Fascione and
Morgan Cahill had six points apiece, and Kendra Landy had four points and eight assists to lead the Tigers (1-0).
