FINE PERFORMANCES

Ella Babashak, Wilton: A senior, Babashak produced first-place finishes in the 100-meter butterfly (1:06.94) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:38.46) for the Warriors, which defeated Staples, 107-79.

Nora Bergstrom, Cheshire: The junior was the 100 butterfly winner (1:04.38) and was part of the 200-yard medley relay team, which placed first in 2:02.18 for the undefeated Rams against Branford.

Maddie Bergin, North Haven: A senior, Bergin won the 50 freestyle (24.87) and 100 freestyle (54.24) in the team’s win over Lauralton Hall.

Anne Bowens, Staples: Bowens, a senior, helped the Wreckers combine for a winning time in the 200-meter medley relay against Wilton (2:05.99). She also notched second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (28.21) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:20.17).

Addie Costello, Staples: Costello placed first on the 1-meter diving board for the Wreckers in their competition against FCIAC foe Wilton, totaling 222 points.

Eva Cuevas, Sacred Heart Academy: A winning effort in the 50 freestyle (26.94) helped pace Sacred Heart vs. Mercy. Cuevas also anchored the team’s 200 freestyle relay squad, which finished first in 1:5375 and was part of the 200-yard medley relay race (first, 2:07.79).

Alanna DePinto, Wethersfield: DePinto touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle (55.95) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.61 ) in a meet against Hall. She also helped lead Wethersfield’s 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams to victory.

Meg Erickson, Darien: A freshman, Erickson finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:17.52) and was part of the Blue Wave’s winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:47.60) in the squad’s win vs. New Canaan.

Ava Fasano, Wilton: Fasano continued her impressive freshman season, winning the 50-meter freestyle race (28.09) in the Warriors’ victory over Staples. She was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:08.73).

Charlotte Frank, New Canaan: Frank was the diving winner in the Rams’ meet against FCIAC rival Greenwich, earning 281.70 points. She placed second against another rival, Darien, (234.66).

Angela Gambardella, North Haven: The senior won the 200 IM (2:15.06) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.72) against Lauralton Hall. She was part of the 200 medley relay that finished first (1:55.04).

Maddie Haley, New Canaan: The junior finished first in the 100-yard backstroke against Greenwich (57.43) and was second in the 200 freestyle (1:59.73). She was the 500 freestyle (5:19.01) and 100 backstroke (58.82) winner against rival Darien. She also led off the team’s winning 200 medley relay squad (1:52.46) against the Blue Wave.

Jenna Handali, Greenwich: Handali, a senior, placed first in the 100 freestyle (55.55) and was second in the 50 freestyle (25.67) in Greenwich’s 101-85 victory against Wilton. She anchored the winning 200 medley relay squad (1:50.34) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:39.95), which took first.

Esme Hunter, Staples: Hunter swam to first-place finishes in the 200-meter individual medley (2:23.87) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:06.08) against Wilton. The senior also led off the Wreckers’ winning 200 medley relay squad (2:05.99).

Claire Kehley, Lauralton Hall: Kehley was the 200 freestyle (2:01.14) and 500 freestyle (5:30.55) winner against North Haven.

Saylor Kirsch, Greenwich: Kirsch, a senior, was the diving winner for the Cardinals against Wilton (249.15). She also placed second vs. New Canaan (256.43).

Kendall Luecke, Darien: A junior, Luecke won the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.62) for the Blue Wave in their 102-84 win over New Canaan. She anchored the team’s winning 200 freestyle relay squad (1:44.76) and took second in the 500 freestyle (5:22.40).

Caterina Li, Greenwich: A sophomore, Li won the butterfly for the Cardinals in their home meet vs. New Canaan with a time of 1:00.18. She was part of the Cardinals’ winning 200 medley relay squad (1:50.56).

Meghan Lynch, Greenwich: The senior touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.87), then took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.19) for the Cardinals in their 114-72 win vs. visiting New Canaan. She competed on Greenwich’s winning 200-medley relay squad (1:50.56) and first-place 400 freestyle relay team (3:43.47). In Greenwich’s 101-85 win over Wilton, Lynch was first in both the 200 individual medley (2:05.78) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.48). She helped spark the Cardinals’ 200 medley relay team that placed first in 1:50.34 and the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:39.95).

Skylar Mascarinas, New Canaan: Mascarinas took top honors in the 50-yard freestyle against Greenwich, clocking in at 25.65 seconds. The sophomore also won the 100 freestyle (55.92).

Aislinn Mitchell, Hall: Mitchell, a senior, finished first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.53 and was the 200 individual medley (2:19.59) winner for Hall, which edged Wethersfield, 93-91.

Elisia Pagliuca, Mercy: The junior helped spark Mercy against Sacred Heart Academy, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.59, then taking first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.58).

Katherine Pillion, Mercy: In Mercy’s 110.5-83.5 win over Sacred Heart Academy, Pillion, a junior, placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.29) and won the 100 freestyle (58.67).

Lexi Punishill, Darien: In Darien’s victory against New Canaan, Punishill, a senior, placed first in the 100 freestyle (56.63 seconds) and was second in the 50 freestyle (25.65). She led off the team’s winning 200 freestyle relay (1:44.76) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:47.60) squads.

Julia Stevens, Cheshire: Stevens added another victory to her senior season, winning the 100-yard freestyle in 56.31 seconds in the team’s win against Branford.

Olivia Velleco, Seymour: A junior, Velleco posted a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (58.27) in Seymour’s 88-74 win against Watertown. She was also part of the team’s winning 200 medley relay (1:58.25) and 200 freestyle relay (1:49.04) squads.

Sophia Velleco, Seymour: The freshman won the 200 freestyle (2:01.28) and finished first in the 500 freestyle (5:26.24) in Seymour’s meet vs. Watertown. She also anchored Seymour’s 200 freestyle relay, which posted a winning time of 1:49.04.

MEETS TO WATCH

Trumbull vs. Ridgefield, Friday, at Barlow Mountain School, 4 p.m.: Both teams are in the midst of solid seasons and gearing for the postseason. Lauren Walsh leads the Eagles, while Riley Giles and Hannah Seward have paced the Tigers.

Staples at Greenwich, Oct. 16, 4:30 p.m.:The defending State Open, Class LL and FCIAC champion Cardinals once again, possess impressive depth in each event, including diving. Undefeated Greenwich has passed each one of its tests so far and should be challenged by the Wreckers, led by Esme Hunter and Anne Bowens.

Daniel Hand at North Haven, Friday, 4 p.m. Defending Class M champion Hand is off to a 7-0 start with four meets left in its season. North Haven was 6-0 going into its matchup against Cheshire Tuesday afternoon. Hand won the Class M team title in 2018, while North Haven placed second.

Amity vs. Shelton, Oct. 15, at High Plains Community Center, 7:20 p.m.: Amity was 6-1 heading into its meet against Foran on Friday.

Seymour at Naugatuck, Friday, 4 p.m.: Seymour is hoping for another undefeated season. Naugatuck always presents a good challenge.
