TORRINGTON >> Torrington High School’s girls soccer team beat Wolcott 1-0 with an early goal and strong defense at Torrington Middle School Thursday afternoon.
Both teams opened with wins Tuesday.
Torrington, laden with seniors, cruised to a 3-1 win at Ansonia.
Wolcott’s 4-2 win at Seymour – picked by some as a title contender – was a surprise to all but Eagle coach Chris Riviezzo. “We’re young, but 10 of our 18 kids play premiere soccer,” he said.
Thursday’s match figured to be a tester for both teams.
A Wolcott defender just got to Torrington forward Alexis Tyrrell’s first strong shot, three minutes into the game. The Eagles took the first corner kick, nine minutes in. Two minutes later, Wolcott keeper Isabella Inglese came out to meet Tyrrell, coming down the middle of the field. Tyrrell, a sophomore, chipped her shot over Inglese’s head into the net.
For the rest of the game, Torrington dominated the middle of the field while defenses on both ends stopped the attacks.
“We didn’t play our game,” Riviezzo said. “They outhustled us and beat us to the ball all day.”
“We’ve been playing together since our freshman year,” said senior Kendra Covington, who led a strong Red Raider back wall along with fellow senior Lindsay Trobel.
Behind them, junior Casey Saade made an impressive home debut in the net with seven saves. Still 1-0 at the half, frustration mounted on both sides.
Raider forward Paige Middleton, charging upfield on a breakaway three minutes into the second half, seemed to be tripped on the way to the goal, no call.
Seven minutes later, a yellow card came out for an Eagle player on a push. Riviezzo got one for his objections in the 15th minute.
Two minutes from the end of the game, Wolcott played forward for a last-ditch effort.
The Raiders held again. Tyrrell carried into the Eagle penalty box on a counter-attack. A Wolcott defender took her down for an automatic penalty. Inglese blocked the penalty shot.
“I’m just happy to be 2-0,” Torrington coach Mario Longobucco said.
The Raiders host perennial Class S champion Immaculate-Danbury at the Middle School today at 4:15 p.m.
