TORRINGTON >> The Torrington girls soccer team controlled the ball without a reward for most of a game with Ansonia Tuesday afternoon at Torrington High.
Finally, with 14 minutes left, Red Raider Shannon Reardon charged Ansonia’s goal, delivering a 1-0 Red Raider win.
“I was frustrated,” said Reardon. “It’s tough on offense without our lead scorer.”
Reardon, a junior who normally plays in the backfield, might become Torrington’s new leading scorer thanks to injuries and lack of numbers.
Last week, starting goalkeeper Erica Morrison went down with a concussion on a team already plagued with lack of numbers (15 girls are now healthy).
Coach Mario Longobucco moved lead scorer Alexis Tyrrell into the net as the best available athlete for the job while Reardon moved up from the backfield.
Against the 1-5 Chargers, who start two freshmen and a sophomore, Torrington, 2-4, had plenty of talent on the field, but missed the fire Tyrrell, a senior, brings to the attack.
In the first half, Reardon took the majority of Torrington’s six shots, the closest one off Ansonia keeper Ursula Kirejczyk’s hands, onto the cross bar and out of bounds with nine minutes left.
Encouraged by a 0-0 halftime score, the Chargers played lots of long sends in the second half, resulting in two hard shots at Tyrrell as Reardon’s frustration mounted.
With time running short, Raider midfielder Cassie Fedor led Reardon with a pass down the middle of the field. Reardon ran it in.
“It was a good game for us,” said Ansonia Coach Megan Skuret. “We fought. We wanted the ball.”
“We’ll take the win,” said Coach Longobucco
“It’s a big week for us,” he said, eying winnable games today against 2-3 Seymour and Friday against 0-5 Sacred Heart, along with another game against Seymour the following Tuesday.
The Chargers, encouraged by Tuesday’s showing against Torrington, look forward to 2-4 Naugatuck coming to Ansonia Friday and 0-4 Derby the following Tuesday.
Playing frustrated might be a key for both teams.
