MIDDLETOWN — Mya Johnson’s header with 4 minutes, 47 seconds remaining in the first overtime was the difference as Old Lyme’s girls soccer team won their third-straight Class S championship with a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross Saturday at Rosek-Skubel Stadium.
Danielle McCarthy assisted on the eventual winner, which came off a corner kick. Johnson was named the MVP for the Wildcats, who have now won the title outright in back-to-back seasons. The Wildcats shared the title with Notre Dame-Fairfield in 2015.
Old Lyme trailed early 1-0 when Holy Cross’ Adalisse Padilla converted penalty kick with 31:37 remaining in the game. The penalty was awarded for a hand ball on Old Lyme in the box.
But the Wildcats quickly responded when Madeline Ouellette’s put back teammate Maddie Zrenda’s direct kick on goal with 24:58 remaining.
