WATERBURY — Game MVP Samantha St. Pierre scored twice to help No. 2 seed Granby defeat No. 20 Berlin 3-0 for the Class M state championship Saturday at Snyder Field.
“We’ve kept on preaching family, family, family. And everyone is back (next year),” Granby coach Edward Dzielak said. “This team, I can’t yell at them. I’m usually the coach who is creaming at everybody.”

St. Pierre’s first goal was huge, coming with 26.5 seconds left before halftime to break a scoreless tie for the Bears (19-1). Berlin goalkeeper Lindsay Walsh had made five saves to that point.
“It set the tone,” Dzielak said of the first goal.
It remained a 1-0 lead for Granby until Maria Nolan made it 2-0 Bears in the 55th minute. Then with 7:22 left, Walsh collided with St. Pierre, resulting in a penalty kick for the MVP.
Berlin (12-9) pulled four seeded upsets to reach the final.
This is the sixth state championship for Granby while Berlin was playing in its first state final since 1998.
