It took until the final regular-season game to accomplish it, but the Yellowjackets did so on the road, beating Hamden 4-3 Wednesday night. East Haven will enter the postseason next week at 7-7-2.
“We were very young this year,” East Haven coach Ray Curren said. “We lost our entire defense (from last year) so we had a lot of holes to fill. It took us awhile to get going.”
The Yellowjackets spent part of the season atop the SCC Oronoque Division after sweeping all three division opponents (Branford, North Haven and Wilbur Cross) the first time around. At the midway point, East Haven was just two wins away from the school record.
But the Yellowjackets struggled down the stretch, leaving it to the last game to gain the milestone. Hamden came back to tie the game twice before the go-ahead goal by Megan Kikosicki with just over 6 minutes left in regulation ended up being the decisive one.
“Our team showed a lot of guts,” Curren said.
Kikosicki has been East Haven’s top goal scorer this season with 16 goals, along with six assists. A junior, she has already committed to play at Division I New Hampshire.
East Haven, which began its varsity program in 1998, is now hoping to gain its first state tournament victory. The Yellowjackets will have to do so on the road in the Class M division. The CIAC tournament pairings will be released Friday morning.
