NEW MILFORD — The weather may have been cold and damp Tuesday night, but the Newtown School girls lacrosse team remained red-hot.
Led by a stout defense and a multi-faceted offense, the Nighthawks remained undefeated in South-West Conference play with a 16-0 victory over New Milford. The Nighthawks improved to 5-0 in the SWC, 5-1 overall, and although there is a month remaining in the regular season, they hope to be in the championship hunt when the conference playoffs roll around. Newtown won the SWC title every year from 2005 to 2014, and hasn’t won one since.
“We’ve got a really cohesive group with a lot of upper-classmen who have been playing together for a couple years,” Newtown coach Maura Fletcher said. “It’s been a good start, and right now, we’re just focusing on each game.”
If Tuesday’s performance is any indication, the Nighthawks have reason to feel confident. Alison Kelleher led the way with four goals and an assist, all in the first 17 minutes of the game. Dylan Zahansky scored three goals and Hana Rosenthal and Alex Futterman each tallied two goals and an assist. Rylee Harrell added a goal and an assist, and Caroline Condon, Cassidy Kortze, Olivia Hage and Maggie McInerney each scored a goal. And the Newtown defense, led by goalies Catie Gregory and Tess Davenport, didn’t give up a thing.
“We work really well together,” Kelleher said. “We’re all there for each other, and we work off each other well.”
Goalie Emily Buser made nine saves for New Milford (3-4, 2-3 SWC), which saw its winning streak snapped at three.
“You have to have a really short memory as an athlete, and we’ll be right back here tomorrow morning to try and get better and improve,” New Milford coach Greg LaCava said. “Our goal is to get better each day.”
Newtown is set to visit Pomperaug on Thursday at 7 p.m., before returning home to host Glastonbury on Saturday at 3 p.m.
New Milford is scheduled to visit Stratford at Penders Field on Thursday at 7 p.m.
