NEW HAVEN >> The Guilford girls hockey team pulled two seeded upsets en route to Sunday’s Connecticut High School Girls Hockey Association Championship game. But Simsbury wasn’t about to make it three.
Maggie Grigely scored the game’s first two goals to propel second-seeded Simsbury to its first state title with a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Guilford at Ingalls Rink.
“We never talked about winning a state championship until the bus ride (to Ingalls Sunday),” Simsbury coach Kris Arnold said.
Said Guilford coach Gil Schaper: “It would have been an unbelievable third upset if we could’ve pulled it off. We don’t have the players that they have and the depth that these teams have that we play against. What we have is what we have
Arnold said this was the Trojans’ first appearance in a state final after reaching the semifinals three times.
This was an All-Southern Connecticut Conference final as the Trojans also captured the SCC Division I title over East Catholic in overtime.
“We did not touch the league championship plaque,” Arnold said. “We won that five years in a row (in different leagues). That was our initial goal. Then they said they were looking for something bigger.”
Simsbury beat Guilford 2-0 during the regular season.
Grigely scored once in each of the first two periods. Annie Deliso, who assisted on Grigely’s first goal, scored in the third period to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead.
Catherine Lawrence scored the only goal for the Indians 1 minute, 7 seconds later. Lexi Cafiero had the assist.
Guilford had beaten both No. 4 New Canaan 3-2 and No. 1 Darien 2-1 in overtime, to get to Sunday’s final.
“It was an unbelievable year,” Schaper said. “If someone had asked me before the year if we would have made it this far, I probably would have said it was doubtful, but everything came together. The girls are very proud of what they have accomplished as they should be. It was a very memorable season for us all.”
Edy Moritz made 32 saves for Guilford.
