Forty-nine was the lucky number for the Fairfield Ludlowe girls golf team in its match against Greenwich on Tuesday.
Senior Katie Chan, freshman Juliet Bucher and junior Phoebe Burtt each shot a 49 for the Falcons, who edged the Cardinals 201-203 at Griffith E. Harris Golf Course in Greenwich.
Complementing Chan, Bucher and Burtt was Ludlowe freshman Catherine Wallace, who shot a 54. With the victory, the Falcons improved their record to 2-1.
“I’m really impressed with Ludlowe,” GHS coach Marie Shimchick said. “They had three players finish with a 49, so their consistent rounds helped them. They played with a lot of maturity.”
Sophomore Sydney Nethercott led the Cardinals, shooting a 2-over-par 39 to earn medalist honors. Nethercott, who produced a strong freshman season last spring, shot 2-under-par from holes 5 to 9. She sank birdie putts on the par-5 sixth hole and the par-3 7th hole.
Nethercott’s round also included par putts on the third, fifth, eighth and ninth holes.
“It was a great round for Sydney, she is going to have a big season,” Shimchick said.
Senior Jane Giuliani shot a 47 while Gracie Sunoo finished with a 55 for the Cardinals (2-1).
“This was a valuable lesson for our team,” Shimchick said. “It shows them that every single shot counts. When you look at the number of putts we had, our short game is something we need to continue to work on. Overall, our ball-striking was good.”
Greenwich is in action again Wednesday against FCIAC foe Trumbull at Tashua Knolls Golf Course.
“Our players need to learn how to grind it out on the course,” Shimchick said. “How to shoot the lowest possible score when things aren’t going their way or when they are not playing too well — that’s something we are going to work on.”
