Welcome to the cross country championship season!
The state championships for all classifications will run all day Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester.
Below are three names from each class to watch. Runners may not have the fastest times or top places, but just some names to keep an eye out for this weekend!
Class M (9:15 a.m. start time)
Hayley Collins, Tolland: Sophomore has had a sensational season. Placed fourth at Wickham Invite (19:10), finished runner-up at CCC Championships. Will look to help lead Tolland to another state title.
Courtney Akerley, Tolland: Placed fifth at CCC Championships, talented, veteran runner, who won the Class M title last fall in 19:17.
Monique Labarre, Suffield: Senior placed second at NCC Championships in a time of 19:57.34. Finished in eighth place last year at states.
Class MM (10:20 a.m.)
Cyrene Nicholas, Branford: The junior placed third last fall at the state meet in way of leading Branford to its first state crown ever. Tall and smart runner.
Gabrielle Richichi, New Fairfield: Richichi will look to capture her third straight Class MM title. Has been producing great times this season as she won the SWC crown last week in a time of 18:48.91.
Haley Hasty, Rockville: Has had a standout season winning Wickham Invite and claiming the CCC crown last week in 19:17.16.
Class L (11:25 a.m.)
Anne Johnston, Darien: Finished second at the FCIAC Championships on Monday in a time of 14:39. Placed third last fall at states.
Mackenzie Pias, Mercy: Junior has been on a roll as of late, winning the SCC in a course-record time of 18:32; also ran extremely well at Wickham Invite this October, finishing in Top 10.
Danae Rivers, Wilbur Cross: Finished second at the SCC Championships, also captured second at Wickham Invite. Smart runner with a good kick.
Class LL (1 p.m.)
Hannah DeBalsi, Staples: Reigning Class LL champ, coming off a solid showing at the FCIAC Championships in her first race of the season. Ran 17:41 last year. Expect to see time similar and under 18 minutes.
Allison McArdle, Glastonbury: Finished fourth at the CCC meet last week, solid runner that finished seventh at LLs last year.
Emily Criscuolo, Amity: Only a sophomore, Criscuolo has the ability to turn in a good time. Solid runner that placed ninth last year at states. Coming off a fourth place finish at SCC Championships.
Class S (2:05 p.m.)
Sammi Breier, Thomaston: Won the Berkshire League title last week in a time of 20:29.84. The junior has led the way for Thomaston this fall with the graduation of Sabrina Olsen.
Brooke Townsend, Portland: Placed fifth at Shoreline Championships last week in 19:48.8. Will look to crack Top 10 this weekend at states.
Sabrina Chester, Parish Hill: Just a sophomore, won the CSC in a time of 20:41.8, placed 11th overall last fall at states, expect to see a more experienced and mature runner this weekend.
Class SS (3:10 p.m.)
Madeline Brandon, Haddam-Killingworth: Junior won the Shoreline Conference title in a time of 19:08.5 last weekend. Finished third last fall at the state meet.
Samantha Drop, Coginchaug: Placed second at the Shoreline Championships (19:20.2)and has made big strides in the sport. Expect for a strong showing at the state meet.
Meagan Perez, Griswold: Won the ECC title in a time of 20:10, the junior is a talented runner that was runner-up last fall. Helped lead Griswold to team title in 2013.
