For the first time in more than 30 years, the Staples girls’ basketball program has a new coach.
First reported by The Hour, Paco Fabian was named the head coach Thursday afternoon.
Fabian, who also coaches the girls’ tennis team at Staples, is taking over for Ed Huydic, who stepped down in late May. Huydic coached at Staples for 34 years, assembling a 453-322 record.
Fabian, who played basketball for Norwalk, takes over a program that missed the state tournament the last two years. He said he envisions a culture where the student-athletes at Staples are proud to wear the girls basketball uniform.
“We want a positive, competitive atmosphere where the girls succeed on and off the court,” he said. “I want the girls participating in the youth programs to dream of playing for the Staples High Girls team.”
Staples graduated just three players from last season.
